Sweet clover, biennial, with a growth habit similar to lucerne, leaflets narrow, small white flowers in terminal spikes. Adapted to temperate climate, and neutral to alkaline soils with a fair amount of available lime tolerant of summer drought. Sweet clovers have a characteristic smell of coumarin, and this substance in the leaves can decompose and release a toxin which may affect feeding stock75600APG 37095

The winter hardiness and maturity are similar to the variety Arctic. Adapted to western Canada. Developed 1957 from Saskatchewan, Canada. Pedigree: The coumarin-deficient gene was obtained in a few seeds received from W.K. Smith, University of Wisconsin, in 1946. Dr. Smith obtained his material from an interspecific cross between M.albus and M.dentatus, backcrossed to M.albus. At Saskatoon the were backcrossed to selected M.albus five times, then crossed with the varieties Arctic and Pioneer. Citation: J.E.R. Greenshields. 1958. Note on cumino sweet clover. 419APG 41652 'JOTA'Melilotus albus Medik. 10.18730/1552EJ AustraliaAPG2004DONATED19/04/2004ACULTIVAROrigin and Breeding: Open-pollination followed by recurrent selection: several accessions introduced from Argentina were screened at three locations in south-west Victoria. Each accession was tested for coumarin and the 20 plants with the lowest level of coumarin were allowed to open cross-pollinate in the field. All other plants were destroyed before flowering. The progenies of each of these plants were sown as replicated experiments on saline land to determine combining ability. A sub-sample of each of these progenies was also sown as spaced plants and tested again individually for coumarin content. Four parent lines were selected, and of these the best two plants from each parental line with the lowest level of coumarin were allowed to cross-pollinate in the field. Parental material distinguishable from the candidate variety by coumarin level. Selection criteria: coumarin levels significantly lower than the original population. Propagation: by seed.
