Rex Oram selected within a base population of somaclonal material derived from CPI22755 (APG 997), 'Black Mountain', and other selections in the original accession CPI22755 . Selection has been practised over six generations within and between half-sib families grown as spaced plants or sown swards in the field near Canberra for high seed fertility, high tiller number, high herbage yield, shorter awns, and an intermediate level of seed shedding in each plant. Family 10, developed between 1986 and1990, is predominantly seed-retaining.
