Narrative
WISFAL ALFALFA (Reg. no. GP-259, PI 560333) Medicagosativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. is a syn-2 of Ax WISFAL-1, which was derived from 20 diploid plant introduction falcatalines (1,2). The conversion from diploid to tetraploid was ac-complished by backcrossing tetraploidy into diploids using 2neggs (2). Seven sexual generations were used in the develop-ment of WISFAL. Populations were maintained in field nur-series in southern Wisconsin between generations since 1973.WISFAL is robust vegetatively, and fertile in intrastrain orinterstrain crosses with cultivated alfalfa, M. sativa. Thus, thereis unrestricted gene flow from WISFAL to any desired culti-vated tetraploid cultivar, strain, or population
