Narrative
Cultivar: NS Banat ZMS 2 MATERIAL AND BREEDING METHOD The cultivar was developed by individual selection from a local population (Pannonian type) by the polycross method. ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS Excellent yields of green forage and hay when grown on light sandy and medium heavy soils. Resistant to drought and low temperature. MORPHOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS An early cultivar, always in the first group of varieties ready for cutting. Tolerant to frequent cuttings. Rapid initial growth (23.2 cm 15 days after the solstice) and regrowth after first cutting (26.4 cm). Plant height at the time of cutting 65 cm. The portion of leaves in yield 51.1%. PRODUCTIVITY The cultivar yields 84 t/ha of green forage or 18 t/ha of hay under rainfed conditions. High productivity of the cultivar confirmed in the field trials conducted in three locations (Novi Sad, Krusevac and Banja Luka) in the period 1994-1996, following the methodology of the Federal Commission for Cultivar Approval of FR Yugoslavia. The average yield of green forage for the locations and years was 57,580 kg/ha. The highest yield was obtained in Krusevac in 1995, 97,680 kg/ha of green forage in four cuttings. The average yield of dry matter (hay) for the locations and years was 12,368 kg/ha. The highest yield, 19,964 kg/ha, was obtained in Krusevac in 1995. QUALITY OF DRY MATTER The average content of crude proteins, during flowering in four cuttings, was 17.62%. The highest protein content, 18.15%, was obtained in the second cutting. The yield of crude proteins was 3,512 kg/ha. Excellent yields of green forage and hay are obtained on light and medium-heavy soils.
