Narrative
WAR 9: LUCERNE Medicago sativa 'Sceptre' syn L 96 Application No: 1992/097 Accepted 26 Jun 1992 Applicant: Minister for Primary Industries, Adelaide, SA. Description - See Comparison Table A lucerne with moderately erect growth habit, high cool season growth rate, with fine leafy stems and large leaves. Flowers light to medium-dark violet, infrequently very pale violet (<3%). Pods tightly coiled and seed is medium-large. Origin Arose from the interpollination in 1986 of clones selected in 1985 for disease and pest resistance. Breeder is Dr ID Kaehne, Adelaide, SA. Selected for development on the basis of high regrowth vigour, disease resistance, yield and stand persistence. Propagated by seed through 2 generations. Comparative Trials The comparators are 'CUF101', 'Quadrella', 'Trifecta' and 'Aurora'. Conducted at Northfield, Adelaide May 1992-December 1994. Measurements taken from 100 specimens selected at random from 120 plants arranged in randomised complete blocks. Plants raised in open beds spaced 40cm apart in rows 50cm apart. Adaptation 'Sceptre has shown wide adaptation and can be grown in lucerne areas from Tas to central QLD, both irrigated and dryland. Particularly adapted to irrigated culture on sites where root diseases and nematodes are most damaging. Prior Applications and Sales Country Year Status Varietal Name Australia 1992 Pending 'Sceptre' 'Sceptre' was first sold in Australia in 1993.
